After arriving late into Montpelier last night it was a treat to have much of the morning to explore the capital town. For a state capital Montpelier is small and manageable, friendly and has an upbeat youthful vibe. The downtown core is compact made up of numerous old and many historic buildings housing coffee shops, bookstores and a variety of merchants. From there it was a meander down the center of the state and wending our way slightly east until we arrived in the Woodstock area. Here is an area that typifies what we think of when we think “Vermont”: covered bridges, rolling farmland, and a small town straight out of Norman Rockwell. Before arriving in Woodstock coming from the East along US4 you first go through the village of Taftsville with it’s historic red covered bridge. Unfortunately, the bridge was heavily damaged by the Ottauquechee River during the recent flooding and is currently not in presentable condition, but Taftsville also has one of the nicest village general stores around and is worth a visit regardless. The town of Woodstock is made up of neat white New England houses, a village green and a quaint downtown, all tidy and well maintained. It is both beautiful and photogenic, and on a holiday October fall foliage weekend totally overrun. But even with that, it was wonderful. Today’s image is of the covered bridge in downtown Woodstock.
