Banks of the Elk River

Here we were all of only 10 minutes away from downtown Steamboat Springs, Colorado on the banks of the Elk River as the spring runoff swells the river’s flow. Viewing this Narrowleaf Cottonwood (Populus angustifolia) with the view of the Park Range in the background, I wanted to use the strong backlight from the early morning sun to add what I felt was almost a halo to the tree to set it off from everything else in the scene. I also really enjoyed the high cirrus clouds in the bright blue morning sky and thought they were a nice complimentary contrast to the remaining elements.

Springtime In Steamboat Photography Workshop

Spring is a spectacular time to be in Steamboat Springs. Flowers are blooming, the mountains and valleys are lush and green, rivers are running, and there is an abundance of plant and animal life all waiting to be photographed! Over the course of 3 days we will explore various concepts and techniques for spring photography and how you may incorporate them into your everyday shooting to make your images more exciting and visually compelling. This workshop will give you tools to use as well as broader concepts to think about the next time you go out to shoot. We will learn the fundamentals of composition, light, and subject, with a mix of shooting in the field, informative lectures, and constructive critiques to help each participant improve their photography skills and start taking better pictures.

Small group size will ensure your questions are answered and that you have the opportunity to photograph alongside Jim. Enroll early as we limit the size of our workshops for the participants overall experience.
