Here we were all of only 10 minutes away from downtown Steamboat Springs, Colorado on the banks of the Elk River as the spring runoff swells the river’s flow. Viewing this Narrowleaf Cottonwood (Populus angustifolia) with the view of the Park Range in the background, I wanted to use the strong backlight from the early morning sun to add what I felt was almost a halo to the tree to set it off from everything else in the scene. I also really enjoyed the high cirrus clouds in the bright blue morning sky and thought they were a nice complimentary contrast to the remaining elements.

Colorado Storm Cloud
As we were driving south in Pueblo County in southern Colorado we watched with interest as quite the May storm was brewing ahead. We watched as this Nimbostratus storm cloud began to strengthen and show some signs of central rotation as it gained energy. The massive cloud was on the move and had already hidden much of the Wet Mountains in the background. The mountains to the right are gone and soon the southernmost portion of the range will disappear as well as the storm rumbles its way south. The main illumination in the image is from behind and through the cloud bringing out the striking color and texture as the light comes through the cloud as well as bounces off the ground thus also illuminating for the bottom of the storm cloud.
Grootbos Private Nature Reserves
We were out with a botanist one day walking through the Grootbos Private Nature Reserves down by Walker Bay, right where the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean meet. All of these great silver-edged, pin cushion proteas (Leucospermum patersonii) were beginning to bloom and I was searching to find a nice pattern of them all together. I finally found this one. Taken using a shallow depth of field allowed the first three in a row to stand out in a nice sharp manner while everything else in the background falls off into the distance. This gives the image a nice foreground and background separation.
The Marsh Pride
.
All afternoon, we had been working with this pride of lions up in Kenya (The Marsh Pride), following them and capturing their routines, movement and daily activities. They were on their way from one location to the next when they stopped for a quick drink of water. Here, an elder lioness was teaching this little cub the proper technique for drinking – it was wonderful to witness. They finished at their pit stop and then they were off.
Witsands-Bay Sunset
On the day of this shot, we had just finished a long day of shooting and we were on our way back to Cape Town when I made the driver stop the car at Witsands-Bay. The sun had just gone down about 20 minutes prior and to be completely honest the sky did not look like much – but I KNEW something was there. I used a time exposure technique to capture this shot, which is why the waves of the ocean are in full motion and the water appears smooth. Using time exposure, the camera has the opportunity to stay open for a longer period of time, giving the waves movement and adding that significant blur. In some situations this technique works well, and this was one of them. I think it made the shot look quite “dreamy” and brought out all the colors of the sunset afterglow.
View into Hout Bay
Driving down from Cape Town to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, we stopped near the end of the Hout Bay looking back toward the direction from which we came. At this angle I wanted to frame the bay with the branches of the tree to include more than just the sky up above. In doing this, I am able to keep the viewer’s attention where I want and not allow it to wander too far up into the sky. Using a flash, I was able to lighten the tree in the foreground and bring out the brown bark of the tree trunk that then adds depth and texture to the shot.
La Petite Ferme
.
Here we were in the Franschhoek wine country of the Western Cape atop one of their beautiful vineyards looking down and across to the other side. It was mid-afternoon on a lovely spring day. You can see the new green grass coming to life in the rows between the vines. This shot captured my attention because of the symmetry of the lines going across the vineyard while looking across them and down into the valley. This was a nice way to end our lunch on this beautiful afternoon.
